Things to do in the Greenway

Greenway brochure
The Greenway provides a unique opportunity for year-round outdoor recreational activities in an urban setting. Enjoy hiking, walking, running, rollerblading, biking, birding, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, golfing, and more in the heart
of Grand Forks/East Grand Forks.

And we don't close for the winter! Living in North Dakota and Minnesota means lots of snow and that equals plenty of opportunities for groomed cross-country ski and snowmobile trails. Not your style? No worries. The  Greenway also offers Ice skating and sledding in many of the parks.

Are you looking for bikes, skis, skates, or other recreational equipment to rent? Check out our local merchants that rent equipment to meet  your needs

Paved Trails
The Greenway features over 20 miles of asphalt trails located  along the Red and Red Lake Rivers. Grab your walking shoes, bike, skateboard, or  inline skates and enjoy a walk on the wild side. What's the best part (besides the  view)? The Greenway trails connect to the larger metropolitan trail system.

Golf
The natural setting along the river provides a scenic backdrop for golf. Lincoln Golf Course in Grand Forks and Valley Golf Course in East Grand Forks underwent significant changes with the construction of the permanent levee and two very unique courses to satisfy your golfing tastes.

Off-leash dog park
Time to let Fido off the leash and play with his new canine friends! Check out the first-ever off- leash dog  park in the
Grand Cities. Located in Lincoln Drive Park, this park offers  two fenced areas to accommodate both large and small dogs.

Fishing
The Red and Red Lake Rivers boast over 70 species of native fish and world-class channel cat fishing.  Four boat ramps and plenty of shore-bank fishing sites provide access to some of the best fishing in the area. Come experience the exhilaration of a big catch on the Red and Red Lake Rivers.  PS: the fishing doesn’t stop with the rivers freeze! Ice fishing in Greater Grand Forks is a long-standing tradition for area anglers.

Camping
Feel the urge to spend a night in the great outdoors? We've got you covered: the Red River State Recreation Area campground is located along the Red River in downtown East Grand Forks. Yep, we said
downtown.

This campground boasts 113 campsites, including 85 electric sites with full hookups  (sewer and water). Campers have plenty of access to multi-purpose trails for walking and biking, picnic areas and two rivers for fishing and boating. The  bonus? The campground location in an urban area offers visitors access to
outdoor recreational opportunities as well as shopping and dining facilities
within walking distance.

Boating
The easy flowing Red and Red Lake Rivers provide the  perfect opportunity for both motorized and non-motorized boating. Four boat ramps are  located throughout the Greenway for easy access. Interested in canoe or kayak rentals? Contact: UND Lifetime Sports Center or (701) 777-3981.

Birding
The picturesque setting of the Greenway and its location adjacent to the Red and Red Lake Rivers provides the perfect opportunity to view many different species of birds in their natural habitat. Located in the Central Flyway, the Greenway provides ample opportunity to view migratory or resident birds. Our friends at the Grand Cities Bird Club have plenty of information  available for birding in the Greenway and in the region.

Don't forget a copy of the Greenway Birding Guide on your next trip to the Greenway!

Check out our birding activity sheets for kids, too!

Education
The location of the Greenway provides the perfect natural setting for educational opportunities in the Greater Grand Forks area. Area educators and students can observe native plant and animal species, in their natural habitat, literally from their own backyards.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is a popular winter sport enjoyed by many residents and visitors. Snowmobiling is allowed during specific dates and times on designated trails only. Before riding in the Greenway check out local ordinances and maps on our snowmobile page.

Orienteering
Orienteering is a sport that is growing in popularity across  the United States. Participants use their navigational skills and compass to  navigate from point to point on a map. A course map is available at www.groundupadventures.

This map shows a start point and a series of control sites within the Greenway. Each control point is labeled with a code word - find all the control points and  write all the code words next to the correct control on your map.  Send your map to our friends at Ground Up Adventures and you’ll be enter into a monthly  drawing for cool prizes!

Cross-country skiing
Outdoor recreation in the Greenway doesn’t stop when the snow  starts to fly. The Greenway has over 15 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. Check out our ski trail maps on the map page.

Swimming Pools
Nothing says summer more than a cool dip in the pool. The Riverside and Sherlock pools provide sweet  relief from the summer heat. Both pools are located near park facilities and the  trail system.
