The original Greenway vision statement was developed during public workshops held in 2001. These workshops were held with our partners at Greenways, Inc., and the US Army Corps of Engineers, who engaged the public to envision recreation along the Red and Red Lake Rivers. It’s hard to believe now, but there was a time when the Greenway was a blank canvas of open space. The concept of activities along the rivers was unpopular among some residents
Twenty-three years later, the Greenway is still going strong. It has transformed from an area most people avoid at all costs into a beautiful gathering space for residents and visitors. Times (and recreation) have changed, but the core vision of the Greenway remains the same - providing an open space that is part of the flood protection system, while providing a natural experience in the heart of Greater Grand Forks.
In 2023, the Greenway Technical Committee worked to refresh the Greenway Vision Statement. The core values of the original statement haven’t changed. It’s just simplified it for easier reading.

"The Greenway of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks is a community asset that protects residents from flooding, preserves the ecological stability of the river corridor, provides year-round recreation, and supports an active lifestyle while connecting the two cities and honoring our river history."
