Shared-use path snowplowing

Residents in Greater Grand Forks are fortunate to have access to over 60 miles of shared-use paths (SUP) throughout the community. And just like all paved surfaces, these paths get covered snow and need to be cleared for use after a snowfall.

How do we get that done? In GGF, the SUP system is maintained by staff from both cities, the University of ND, and the GF Park District. All available street department personnel are used for clearing the streets after a snowfall. Trail cleaning starts after the roads have been cleared.

Street plowing can take several days, depending on the snow conditions, so we appreciate your patience. In general, the order for trail cleaning is:

In GF:
  1. UND connections (UND maintains the path along the English Coulee between University and Gateway Avenues)
  2. Downtown
  3. Greenway
  4. Sidewalk and shared-use path connections near elementary schools with high populations
  5. Major thoroughfares that provide north/south and east/west access
  6. Shared-use path and sidewalk connections

In EGF, the parks and recreation staff clear the SUP after clearing sidewalks on city-owned property.

NOTE: The trails are not cleared on weekends if the snow falls Friday – Sunday. The lower trails are not plowed to allow for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
